Operation Red Sea 2 (2025), also known as Operation Hadal or Operation Leviathan, is a Chinese action war film directed by Dante Lam. Serving as a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Operation Red Sea, this installment shifts the battlefield beneath the ocean’s surface, focusing on high-stakes underwater warfare.
The narrative centers on the Chinese Navy’s elite Jiaolong Squad, who are dispatched to thwart a covert operation involving an advanced enemy super-submarine threatening China’s southeastern coastal cities. To counter this menace, China deploys its state-of-the-art submarine, Longjing, leading to intense underwater confrontations amidst treacherous undersea terrains, including volcanic regions
The film features a robust ensemble cast:
- Huang Xuan portrays Meng Chuang, the platoon leader of the Jiaolong Squad.
- Yu Shi plays Han Xiao, a squad member.
- Zhang Hanyu takes on the role of Zhao Qihang, captain of the Longjing.
- Wang Junkai appears as Cao Honglang, the submarine’s sonarman.
- Du Jiang is Xu Hong, the squad’s second-in-command and demolitions expert.
- Additional cast includes Wang Yanlin, Jiang Luxia, Elvis Han, and Li Jiuxiao, among others
Production took place in Qingdao, utilizing multiple naval vessel models and filmed entirely with IMAX cameras to enhance the visual experience. Despite its high production value and ambitious scope, the film received mixed reviews, with criticisms targeting its character development and narrative coherence.
Released on January 29, 2025, during the Chinese New Year, Operation Red Sea 2 aimed to build upon the success of its predecessor but faced challenges in replicating its acclaim and box office performance
