When they awaken, they discover that the ocean has completely disappeared, replaced by a vast desert-like seabed scattered with debris such as toxic waste barrels, wrecked planes, and plastic pollution. Tom theorizes that the Earth’s magnetic poles have reversed, causing this bizarre phenomenon. The family must now traverse this desolate landscape to reach safety before another pole reversal brings the water back.

The movie explores themes of environmental degradation, familial bonds under pressure, and human resilience. Along their journey across the dry seabed, the family faces numerous challenges: dwindling resources like food and water; dangerous encounters with other survivors; and attacks from fast-moving carnivorous crabs that have adapted to their new oxygen-rich environment. These crabs become one of the film’s most memorable threats in its third act.

Additionally, they encounter a submariner named Nao (Olivier Ho Hio Hen), who offers them hope but only limited space for rescue aboard his submersible vessel. The stakes are heightened as time runs out before the oceans return.

While “Survive” has moments of tension and visually stunning cinematography—particularly its depiction of the barren seabed—it also struggles with pacing issues and character development.
