The story begins in 1928, when an ancient artifact is discovered in Egypt. Decades later, in the present day, the U.S. military enlists the help of Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader), a linguist and Egyptologist, to decode the mysterious symbols on the artifact, known as the Stargate. Jackson determines that the symbols represent coordinates to another world. Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell), a hardened military officer dealing with personal trauma, is assigned to lead a team through the Stargate to explore what lies beyond.

Upon activating the Stargate, they are transported to a distant desert planet called Abydos, where they discover a civilization that resembles ancient Egypt. The local inhabitants, who are oppressed and unable to read or write, live in fear of a god-like ruler named Ra (Jaye Davidson). It is soon revealed that Ra is an alien being who has used advanced technology to pose as a god and enslave the people. The team learns that Ra has control over the Stargate and intends to use it to transport a powerful bomb back to Earth.

As Jackson befriends the locals, particularly a woman named Sha’uri, he gradually deciphers their language and history. Meanwhile, O’Neil and his soldiers engage in combat with Ra’s forces. The oppressed people, inspired by Jackson and O’Neil, begin to rise against their tyrant. In a climactic battle, they overthrow Ra’s rule. Ra attempts to escape, but O’Neil and Jackson use the bomb to destroy his spaceship before he can flee.

With the mission complete, O’Neil prepares to return to Earth, but Jackson chooses to stay on Abydos with Sha’uri. As the Stargate closes, the surviving military team returns home, having uncovered the truth behind one of Earth’s greatest ancient mysteries.
