Fright Night (1985)
Fright Night (1985) is a classic horror-comedy film directed by Tom Holland. It blends vampire horror with dark humor and is widely regarded as one of the best vampire films of the 1980s.
Plot Summary
The story follows Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale), a typical high school teenager who is obsessed with horror movies. One night, he notices that his new neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon), is behaving suspiciously. Charley soon becomes convinced that Jerry is actually a vampire after witnessing him attacking a woman and seeing his supernatural abilities.
However, no one believes Charley—not his skeptical girlfriend Amy Peterson (Amanda Bearse), his best friend “Evil” Ed Thompson (Stephen Geoffreys), or the local police. Desperate, Charley seeks help from Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), a washed-up TV horror show host who once played a famous vampire hunter in movies.
At first, Peter Vincent dismisses Charley as a delusional fan, but after an encounter with Jerry, he realizes the truth. Meanwhile, Jerry, aware that Charley knows his secret, begins to terrorize him and those close to him. He even seduces and transforms Amy into a vampire, forcing Charley and Peter to take action.
Climax & Ending
Charley and Peter must confront Jerry in his own house, engaging in a tense battle filled with classic vampire tropes—wooden stakes, holy water, and sunlight. In the end, they manage to destroy Jerry, saving Amy and restoring her humanity. Peter Vincent regains his confidence, and Charley finally gets his normal life back… or does he?
Themes & Legacy
Fright Night cleverly mixes horror and comedy, paying homage to old-school vampire films while bringing fresh energy to the genre. Chris Sarandon’s performance as the suave yet menacing Jerry Dandrige is iconic, and Roddy McDowall delivers a memorable turn as Peter Vincent, a character inspired by classic horror hosts like Vincent Price and Peter Cushing.
The film was a hit, leading to a sequel, Fright Night Part 2 (1988), a remake in 2011 starring Colin Farrell, and a direct-to-video sequel to the remake in 2013.
