As of January 2025, there is no movie titled “John Carter 2: Gods of Mars” scheduled for release. The original “John Carter” film, directed by Andrew Stanton and released in 2012, was intended to be the first installment of a trilogy based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom series. The planned sequel, “Gods of Mars,” was canceled due to the original film’s poor box office performance.

In the proposed sequel, the story would have begun with Dejah Thoris narrating a prologue to her and John Carter’s child, Carthoris. The plot would have involved the kidnapping of their child by the villain Matai Shang, leading Dejah to embark on a perilous journey down the River Iss to rescue him. John Carter, upon returning to Mars, would have discovered her disappearance and ventured into the planet’s subterranean realms to uncover the advanced race secretly controlling Barsoom’s resources.
