Plot Overview
Set in 1987, the story revolves around a 13-year-old boy, Henry Wheeler (Gattlin Griffith), and his reclusive, emotionally fragile mother, Adele (Kate Winslet). They lead a quiet, isolated life after Adele’s traumatic separation from her husband. Henry tries to support his mother, who suffers from depression, but their lives take a dramatic turn over the Labor Day weekend.
During a rare trip to the store, Henry and Adele encounter Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), an injured and intimidating man. He coerces them into taking him home, but it’s soon revealed that Frank is an escaped convict. Despite the circumstances, Frank proves to be a gentle and caring presence in their lives. As he bonds with Henry and tends to Adele’s emotional wounds, the three begin to form a makeshift family.
As the weekend progresses, Adele and Frank develop a romantic relationship. Frank teaches Henry life lessons, such as baking pies and self-reliance, while trying to avoid capture. However, their idyllic bubble is under constant threat as the police intensify their manhunt for Frank.
