The Expendables 4 (Expend4bles, 2023) 

The Expendables 4, officially titled Expend4bles, is the fourth installment in the action-packed franchise created by Sylvester Stallone. Directed by Scott Waugh, the film continues the legacy of aging mercenaries who take on dangerous missions that others won’t. Packed with explosive action, brutal fights, and a new generation of fighters, Expend4bles blends old-school grit with modern firepower.

The film begins with Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), the seasoned leader of the Expendables, still running missions with his loyal team: Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), and Toll Road (Randy Couture). A new threat emerges in the form of Rahmat (Iko Uwais), a ruthless arms dealer and terrorist who acquires detonators for nuclear weapons with plans to start World War III.

To stop him, the Expendables are hired to intercept the weapons shipment and neutralize Rahmat. Joining the mission are new team members: Gina (Megan Fox), a skilled CIA agent and Lee’s former lover; Easy Day (50 Cent), a weapons expert; and Galán (Jacob Scipio), a brash young mercenary. The team also receives help from Lash (Levy Tran) and Decha (Tony Jaa), a mysterious warrior with a personal grudge.

During the mission, things go sideways. Barney appears to be killed in a fiery plane explosion, leaving the team shaken and Lee Christmas guilt-ridden. Lee is benched by the CIA, but refuses to let Barney’s death be in vain. Going rogue, Lee leads the charge to uncover the truth behind Rahmat’s plan and eliminate the threat.

The team soon learns that Rahmat is working for a shadowy mastermind named Ocelot, whose identity is a mystery but who aims to frame the U.S. and ignite a global war by detonating a nuke in Russia. As the clock ticks down, the Expendables launch an all-out assault on a cargo ship carrying the weapon.

In the final act, it’s revealed—twist!—that Barney is alive, having faked his death as part of a strategy to outmaneuver Ocelot. He rejoins the team just in time for the explosive finale, where they defeat Rahmat and stop the nuclear detonation.

Expend4bles delivers what fans expect: over-the-top action, brutal combat, big personalities, and classic one-liners. While critics were mixed on its story and tone, the film serves as a passing of the torch, hinting at a future where a younger generation might continue the Expendables legacy—under the watchful eye of the old guard.
