Speed (1994)

Speed, directed by Jan de Bont, is a high-octane action thriller that helped redefine the genre in the 1990s. Released on June 10, 1994, the film stars Keanu Reeves as LAPD SWAT officer Jack Traven, Sandra Bullock in her breakout role as Annie Porter, and Dennis Hopper as Howard Payne, a cunning and deadly bomber.
The story begins with a tense hostage situation in a Los Angeles office building elevator rigged with explosives. Jack and his partner, Harry Temple (Jeff Daniels), bravely intervene, saving the hostages and seemingly killing the bomber, Payne—a former cop turned terrorist seeking revenge and money.
However, Payne survives and soon returns with a more elaborate and terrifying plan. He places a bomb on a city bus, rigged to explode if the vehicle drops below 50 miles per hour. Once the bus reaches that speed, the bomb is armed, and any attempt to evacuate the passengers or stop the bus will trigger it. Payne contacts Jack and gives him the rules, setting the stage for a relentless race through the city.
Jack boards the moving bus and quickly realizes the chaos of the situation. After the driver is accidentally wounded, Annie, a civilian passenger, is forced to take the wheel. With police and news helicopters circling, Jack and Annie must keep the bus above 50 mph while navigating congested streets, sharp turns, unfinished highways, and booby-trapped obstacles.
As tension builds, Jack and the LAPD try to identify Payne’s location and defuse the bomb without tipping him off. Payne watches their every move through a hidden camera on the bus. Meanwhile, Jack and Annie develop a connection amidst the life-threatening crisis, balancing survival with a growing emotional bond.
Eventually, Jack discovers Payne’s hideout and confronts him in a final showdown in the subway system beneath Los Angeles. After a brutal fight, Payne is killed, and Jack and Annie escape just before a train crashes.
Speed combines taut suspense, clever plotting, and practical stunts to deliver a thrill ride from start to finish. It was both a critical and commercial success, earning over $350 million worldwide. With its relentless pace, memorable performances, and iconic “bomb-on-a-bus” premise, Speed remains one of the most beloved and influential action films of the ’90s.
