Back to the Future is a groundbreaking science fiction adventure that follows the thrilling time-traveling journey of teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox). Powered by plutonium and capable of time travel when it reaches 88 miles per hour, the machine is activated just as Libyan terrorists — from whom Doc stole the plutonium — show up and shoot him. Marty escapes in the DeLorean, accidentally traveling back to the year 1955.

Stuck in the past without fuel for the time machine, Marty seeks out the younger version of Doc Brown to help him get back to the future. But Marty unwittingly interferes with his parents’ first meeting, causing his future mother to fall in love with him instead of George. This creates a time paradox — if Marty can’t get his parents to fall in love, he will cease to exist.

With time running out, Marty must repair the damage he caused. He helps George stand up to Biff, boosting George’s confidence and ultimately rekindling Lorraine’s interest in him. Marty also helps Doc harness a lightning bolt — timed to strike the town’s clock tower — to generate the 1.21 gigawatts needed to power the DeLorean and send him back to 1985.

Marty returns to a changed present where his parents are confident and successful, and his once-bullied father is now Biff’s boss. Just as things seem to settle, Doc suddenly arrives from the future in a flying DeLorean, warning Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer that something must be done about their kids.
